At the time of publication, more than 5.5 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 had spread across 213 countries and territories, causing an estimated 30+ million job losses in the United States alone, and creating fears of a significant and prolonged global recession. When the novel coronavirus was officially announced by China in late January, few expected such a staggering worldwide impact – not only on the global economy – but also on society as a whole.
