Aon Pension Risk Tracker - July 2024

Since 2011, Aon’s Pension Risk Tracker has estimated the daily funded status of the defined benefit pension plans for S&P 500 companies. This report analyzes the funded status activity and the corresponding experience of each sector, provides insightful benchmarks, and further illuminates defined benefit pension plan trends. 

In this issue, we start with a review of the funded status activity during 2023 for the S&P 500 in aggregate, including an attribution analysis of reasons for the change. We then analyze 2023 funded status activity by sector and highlight key differences between sectors. Next, we review the estimated funded status activity by sector during the first half of 2024 and end with commentary on anticipated trends during the remainder of the year, including continued settlement activity.
